Obsidian's Getting Word Book List

Getting Word: Black Literature for Black Liberation 2022

As we celebrate Juneteenth 2022, Obsidian would like to take a moment to recognize how vital Black literature and Black voices have been to the American literary landscape. To honor our diverse and innovative community, Obsidian has joined with four other Black literary arts organizations again this year for a collective campaign—Getting Word: Black Literature for Black Liberation.

Our campaign began Juneteenth, a date in 1865 when Black folks in Texas “Got Word” of the Emancipation Proclamation, and ends on July 4th, another holiday of liberation. Our goal is simple: to link the newly minted holiday of Juneteenth to a tradition of supporting the organizations behind America’s Black authors.

Who is “Getting Word?”
The collective includes Obsidian, Cave Canem, Furious Flower Poetry Center, The Hurston/Wright Foundation, and The Watering Hole. We are organizations at the center of a shift in American letters—a Black shift—publishing America’s leading authors.

Contributions to this campaign will be equally distributed amongst all five organizations and will support the discovery, cultivation, and promotion of Black writers and artists.

Please help Obsidian remain an independent beacon for critical-creative Black thought by spreading the word on Getting Word and donating today! Visit the Getting Word website at https://gettingword.org/
