Karma Mayet Johnson is a multidisciplinary performer and writer who has worked with renowned directors and musicians, and is the composer/librettist of Indigo, a Blues opera. Her work has been widely recognized and supported, and she currently stars in Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower, the opera, while sharing her transformative Rootsong™ practice in cultural organizations and with individuals.

Karma Mayet Johnson
Biography
Multidisciplinary performer and writer Karma Mayet johnson has travelled across the US and internationally, working in the theater with directors such as Robert Wilson and Bill T. Jones, and with musicians Toshi Reagon, Lizz Wright, Vernon Reid, Meshell Ndegeocello, and The Roots. She is composer/librettist of Indigo, a Blues opera, which has been previously featured in Obsidian. Her poems have appeared in Nocturnes (re)view of the literary arts, Cave Canem’s Gathering Ground, and elsewhere. Her work has been supported by The Field, the DC Humanities Council, and the Astraea Lesbian Writers Fund (for fiction). Karma is currently a member of the cast of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower, the opera, which toured to four continents in its first year. Her play, Race Card, and was deemed “powerful, political theater” by the New York Times. As creator of the Rootsong™ practice, she shares the transformative process of somatic improvisation in cultural organizations and with individuals.
