Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is an action role-playing video game developed by the Cameroonian developer Kiro’o Games. In September 2015 Kiro’o started a Kickstarter campaign to complete their game, which was successfully completed a month later.
Since the 1975 release of Atari, with the home edition of Pong, video games have achieved a place in our leisure time across global cultures. But even with gaming subculture gaining acceptance among more mainstream media, there is still a small, underground group in the gaming community: Black programmers who make games relating to the Black experience. This is where Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan comes in.
This game was the brainchild of Ghanaian Olivier Madiba and his friend Dominique Yakan Brand. Aurion is a beautiful 2D RPG with real-time combat. Madiba incorporates elements from games like Final Fantasy 7 and Gears of War with African mythology, creating something new and interesting. Gameplay is from the perspective of the Prince of Zama Enzo Kori-Odan, with help from his fiancée Erine Evou, and the game begins with Enzo Kori-Odan’s impending coronation as king and wedding to Erine Evou. Before either can happen, Enzo Kori-Odan’s brother-in-law takes over, exiling Kori-Odan and Erine Evou in the process. Throughout the game, the two travel through the land in order to save it from the villains who have tried to take over while also dealing with real issues that happen in African culture. This small detail—showing some real life issues in a fantasy game—helps incorporate the two more seamlessly. Aurion was developed by Kiro’o Games, a small company based in Yaoundé Cameroon, and was completely crowdfunded on Kickstarter in October 2015. It was subsequently greenlit in February of 2016 and officially released on April 14th, 2016. It is is available on Steam.
All in all, this game is a big winner in the gaming community. With its beautifully diverse setting, interesting game play, and rich storyline, Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a game that is definitely worth your time.
